Running a marathon is already a true accomplishment. Running two major marathons within six days of each other as a senior takes it to a whole new level.

That's the reality for Sandy Wike and her four friends. The Kelowna residents, aged 56 to 76, completed the Boston Marathon last Monday and are competing in the Big Sur marathon in California tomorrow.

"Once the five of us qualified for Boston and I discovered that the Big Sur challenge was within one week. I thought well we'll give it a shot," Wike told Radio West's Rebecca Zandbergen.

She says it didn't take much to convince her friends, including 76-year old Liz Borrett.

"However hard it is to get out of the door in the morning you always feel good afterwards. The friendship is amazing."

While the 60-year old admits the terrain for the Big Sur is notorious for being tricky to run on, Wike says confidence is still high for her and her group.

"It's quite hilly, we're all kind of nervous about that. We're sort of debating whether we should try and stick together to pull each other along. We think it would be tons of fun to finish together."
