Severe thunderstorms were forecast for a good chunk of B.C.'s Interior on Wednesday, according to Canada's weather forecasting agency.

Environment and Climate Change Canada said it was tracking a cluster of thunderstorms on Wednesday afternoon.

The forecaster had issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the central Interior, including Prince George, as well as the northeast and southeast regions.

In the Kootenay Lake, Slocan Lake and Arrow Lakes areas, a severe thunderstorm warning was issued — meaning a storm was imminent. Environment Canada said the storm would arrive in some southeastern communities by 4:30 p.m. PT Wednesday.

"Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain," the forecaster said.

"Take immediate cover if a thunderstorm approaches. If outside, protect yourself from flying debris and hail."

It said power outages may occur.

As of 9:30 p.m. PT on Wednesday, many of the warnings and watches had been lifted, save for the Elk Valley in B.C.'s southeast corner where a severe thunderstorm watch remained in effect.

Parts of the Interior have certainly felt the heat over the past few days, as the mercury climbed well above 30 C in many areas.

As of Wednesday afternoon, there were 80 active wildfires burning across the province, according to the B.C. Wildfire Service. Evacuation alerts are in place for some communities.
