Parents at Strawberry Hill Elementary concerned after school hit with bullets
Police say man was shot in back in nearby cul-de-sac, then ran to school
Parents dropping their children off at Strawberry Hill Elementary School in Surrey this morning found bullet holes in their school and police on the school grounds, investigating a shooting that left one man injured last night.
Police were called to the school, in the 7600 block of 124 street, at about 6 p.m. PT Tuesday, when someone reported gunfire in the area.
The actual shooting happened in a nearby cul-de-sac at 123a St, after a confrontation between two carloads of people, said Cpl. Scotty Schumann of Surrey RCMP.
"It really causes us a lot of concern because of the brazen nature," said Schumann. "This is occurring in public with seemingly no concern for innocent bystanders in the area. We're just thankful that nobody else was injured."
'This is my home'
It's unclear whether any children were on the school grounds at the time, but some parents are still concerned.
"I'm worried, this is my home and my community," said Aden Abdirisaq as he dropped his son off at school Wednesday morning.
"I think that parents, like everyone else, are outraged that this happens in our community," said Doug Strachan, who speaks for the Surrey School District.
"The chance of hurting somebody, particularly in a school ground where there are playgrounds and so forth, is outrageous."
Classes proceeded as usual Wednesday, but the school's normal counseling staff would be looking out for children who had questions or wanted to talk about the police presence, said Strachan.
