Changes are coming to the SkyTrain network
TransLink changing Millennium and Expo Lines as Evergreen Extension gets set to open
The SkyTrain network is about to undergo some changes that could have an impact on how you get to work or school.
Starting on October 22, the Millennium Line will no longer travel to Waterfront Station in downtown Vancouver.
Instead, it will run from Lougheed Town Centre in Burnaby to VCC-Clark in Vancouver.
"The current way that the Millennium Line works has caused confusion for more than a decade," said Ian Fisher, B.C. Rapid Transit's manager of operations planning.
"The Millennium Line comes through, doubles back on itself, and then it passes through the same station twice. That's caused a lot of confusion for our customers. This future operating plan changes that."
Passengers will have to transfer, if they want to go all the way downtown.
When the Evergreen Extension opens, which will be sometime before Christmas, the Millennium Line will run from VCC-Clark to Lafarge Lake-Douglas in Coquitlam without requiring a transfer.
TransLink CEO Kevin Desmond says the changes are part of a testing program to get ready for the extension.
"By doing this well in advance of opening the Evergreen Extension, we are giving our customers a chance to adjust and learn how the changes may affect how they travel on our system," Desmond said.
Expo Line changes
The Expo Line will split into two branches.
One will travel between Waterfront and Production Way-University in Burnaby.
The second will travel between Waterfront and King George Station in Surrey.
Fisher says the frequency of Millennium Line trains will increase, but the Expo Line will remain roughly the same.
