Slain Surrey teen remembered at vigil

Nearly two hundred people gathered at Surrey's Holland Park Friday evening to remember shooting victim Maple Batalia.

The 19-year-old was gunned down in a parking lot at SFU’s Surrey campus on Sept. 28, 2011.

Those who gathered Friday lit candles and said prayers in her honour.

"She helped me in everything like math, homework and projects so I will never forget the way she helped me in everything," said Ajay Batalia, Maple’s nephew.

No arrests have been made in Batalia’s death and few details have emerged.

Police released a video of a white Dodge Charger leaving the area after the shooting, but few other leads have emerged.

"Not a day goes by that we all don't pray for her justice," said Jennifer Bains, who went to high school with Batalia.

"It's honestly so tragic the way that everything happened. I guess it's hard for everyone not know what happened or how it happened."

But police say any information has to come from the community itself.

"We know that in a year's time people will talk," said Sgt. Jennifer Pound with the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.

"We believe that people have talked about this murder and that may have more information than what they initially had in the beginning stages and we want those people to come forward, the people that have the intimate knowledge about her homicide."

Batalia’s family is holding out hope that someone with information will come forward to police.

"She didn't do anything wrong and for you to be able to help our family would breathe back some life into us and really give her the peace she deserves and also show that we don't condone these kinds of acts and that this doesn't happen to another family again," said Roseleen Batalia, Maple's sister.
