Police and search crews recovered the body of a 33-year-old Squamish man Sunday morning, after he was swept into the Squamish River while driving his all-terrain vehicle near Brackendale on Saturday night.

The man was a part of a group riding their ATVs on the riverbank just before 10 p.m. PT, according to Corp. Dave Ritchie of the Squamish RCMP detachment.

"The male rider had driven it into the river, came back out and drove it back into the river again. The machine went into a crevice and flipped and the male was thrown into the river away from his machine," said Ritchie.

"Other riders tried to follow him as he was swept downstream in the current. They then lost sight of him and contacted police," said Ritchie.

The man's identity has not yet been released by police, pending the notification of his next of kin.
