Stanley Cup riot named top B.C. news story of 2011
CBC News has named Vancouver's Stanley Cup riot in June as the top news story of 2011, as the CBC's Ian Hanomansing reports.
The shocking series of events that unfolded in downtown Vancouver on June 15 — the Stanley Cup riot — has been named B.C.'s top news story of 2011 by CBC News.
Enthusiasm that had been building for weeks with the Vancouver Canucks' romp through the NHL playoffs suddenly turned ugly when the team stunningly lost the seventh and final game of the Finals to the Boston Bruins.
Hundreds among the more than 100,000 people that had gathered for an expected celebration downtown started burning vehicles, confronting police in riot gear, breaking windows and looting stores in an orgy of vandalism and civil disorder that lasted more than three hours.
The CBC's Ian Hanomansing reports.
