Surrey hit-and-run victim dies
Police investigating after man was struck from behind by vehicle
Police are investigating footage captured by a surveillance camera for clues into an apparent hit and run in the early hours of Thursday morning in Surrey, B.C.
The incident took place around 3.30 a.m. PT on Bridgeview Drive in Surrey when the unidentified man was struck from behind while pushing a grocery cart. He later died of his injuries.
The video footage seized from a nearby business shows a semi-truck with a white trailer crashing into the man.
"What we’re looking for now is anybody that has a semi with some damage or any evidence of striking someone," Sgt. Dale Carr with Surrey RCMP told CBC News.
"Quite frankly, it’s possible the driver didn’t realize he struck the individual."
The victim, whose name has not been released, was, Carr said, known in the local area.
"He’s a male in his late 30s/early 40s, [who] frequents the area pushing a shopping cart. [He is] thought to be a homeless person, or a person that does a lot of binning."
Police are asking the driver of the semi to come forward, but expect to track them down fairly quickly either way.
They are also asking any witnesses to come forward with information that may help the investigation.
