They arrived to find a 55-year-old man suffering from burns, who died at the scene.

A middle-aged woman was also found suffering from smoke inhalation. She was taken to hospital in serious condition.

Cause of fire not suspicious

The cause of the fire is currently unknown and Surrey RCMP's Serious Crimes section was leading the investigation early Wednesday morning. But police later released a statement deeming the event "non-suspicious."

"Anytime there's a death involving a fire, the Serious Crimes section will take over until they can make a determination as to what the cause would be," said Staff Sgt. Dave Macdonald.
