A second man has died in as many weeks at the Surrey Pretrial Services Centre.

RCMP say a 25-year-old man is dead following an altercation with his 22-year-old cellmate on Aug. 3, shortly after 7:30 p.m. PT.

They say the victim "sustained extensive injuries" during the altercation and was transported to hospital as a result where he died from his injuries at 1:30 a.m. PT.

The Lower Mainland's Integrated Homicide Investigation Team was called to look into the matter.

"IHIT is working with the Integrated Forensic Identification Section, the Surrey RCMP, the Surrey Pretrial Services Centre, and the B.C. Coroner's Service to help piece together the factors that led up to the altercation and subsequent death of the male victim," said Cpl. Meghan Foster in a written statement.

Foster said the team has consulted with Crown Counsel about homicide-related charges, which have yet to be approved.

Police say the men didn't know each other prior to being held awaiting court appearances on separate matters.

IHIT has not released the victim's name.

On July 25, Surrey Pre-Trial staff found UBC sexual assault suspect David Singh Tucker dead in his cell.

The B.C. Coroners Service confirmed that Tucker died late on July 24.
