A British family's holiday trip to B.C. has turned to tragedy after an 58-year-old woman was killed in a snowmobiling accident east of Golden.

RCMP said the woman was part of a guided tour group that included her husband, son and daughter-in-law.

They were in a rural area east of Golden, where the woman died on Tuesday.

The woman was trying to make a sharp turn on a trail when her machine plunged down a 20-metre embankment and she hit some trees, police said in a news release Thursday.

Although the woman had a helmet, she suffered serious head injuries and later died, despite efforts to resuscitate her.

The woman's identity has not been released at the family's request.
