A quick guide to what's happening in the city on the August long weekend
The August long weekend is prime season for some of Vancouver's best family-friendly events. Here's a quick guide to get your weekend started.
Davie Street party
Get an early start on Pride weekend festivities by hitting up the annual Davie Street dance party on Friday. For the first time, starting at 4 p.m. PT Davie Street from Bute to Broughton Streets will be open to all ages.
At 7 p.m., the over-19 crowd can start enjoying cocktails in the Licensed Zone from Bute to Burrard Street and dance the night away.
Celebration of Light
Team Thailand will be lighting up the skies over English Bay with firefworks on Saturday for the third and final night of the Celebration of Light. Expectations are high following Team Canada's crowd-pleasing performance on Wednesday night.
Be sure to head down to the water early and grab a good seat for the air show that will precede the fireworks starting at 8 p.m. Team Thailand ignites their fireworks display at 10 p.m.
Dyke March
On Saturday afternoon, Vancouverites on the city's east side can show their support for local queer women by checking out the annual Dyke March on East Fifth Avenue.
The Pride weekend alternative event was initiated ten years ago by a grassroots movement that felt the Pride Parade was overshadowing issues for queer women.
The march starts at noon and ends in Grandview Park.
35th Annual Pride Parade
What started in 1978 as a protest march through Davie Village has become one of the world's most vibrant Pride events. Organizers expect at least 650,000 people to line the parade route, which will cover 20 city blocks, to watch the more than 150 floats expected to participate.
The parade begins at noon and runs until 3 p.m.on Sunday.
Pride Festival and Market
If you're jonesing for more Pride fun after the parade, then be sure to check out the Pride Festival at Sunset Beach. There will be 150 booths and tents, live entertainment, good eats and 150,000 other people partying down.
The party starts at 11 a.m. and continues until 6 p.m.
