IIO spokesperson Owen Court says when officers arrived on scene, they were confronted by a man who was shot by police and who has died as a result of his injuries.

Victoria Police Chief Frank Elsner told a Saturday afternoon news conference he can't comment further because the matter is now under investigation.

"This is a tragic day in our community," said Elsner, "and as the chief I’d like to offer my sincere condolences to this man’s family, and my promise to our communities, that we will cooperate fully with the IIO in their investigation."

After the shooting, witnesses reported seeing a man being taken from the house and put into an ambulance.

It's not known whether the man was taken to hospital or whether he died at the scene although there were reports the ambulance remained at the scene.
