Volunteer firefighter Brian Smyth dies fighting Cultus Lake fire
Smyth collapsed while fighting a house fire at the south end of Cultus Lake
Brian Smyth, a seven-year volunteer firefighter with the Columbia Valley Volunteer Fire Department died in hospital over the weekend after suffering a heart attack while trying to fight a house fire earlier in the week.
Smyth was 57-years-old.
The fire broke out around 5:30 p.m. PT Wednesday.
Firefighters from the Cultus Lake and Chilliwack fire departments were also called to the scene
The fire department says Smyth was fighting the blaze on Iverson Road, at the south end of Cultus Lake when he collapsed. A resident of the house escaped unhurt.
The B.C. Ambulance Service was already on scene and CPR was started. He was eventually transferred to an air ambulance and flown to Royal Columbian Hospital where he spent two days on life support.
In a statement, the Fraser Valley Regional District said, "Smyth continues to give back in death, donating his organs to save the lives of others."
The district says it will hold a full Line of Duty funeral in Smyth's honour.
