One woman was arrested Monday in connection with the death of another female inmate at the Alouette Correctional Centre for Women, in Maple Ridge, B.C., police say.
On Friday, 51-year-old April Peregooda was found unresponsive by jail staff and taken to hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Peregooda, who lived in Vernon before incarceration, had been in jail for seven months.
Officials are waiting for autopsy results to confirm how she died but Ridge Meadows RCMP, suspecting foul play, called the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team to investigate.
IHIT says the investigation has just begun, and is hoping to learn more about a possible motive by speaking to other inmates.
No charges have been laid.
