A one-block section of 17th Avenue S.W. is now closed until Sunday evening while city crews repair the underground sewer line.

From Thursday at 9 a.m. until June 11 at 7 p.m., the roadway will be closed to traffic from Second Street to Fourth Street S.W., the city said in a release.

The north sidewalk of 17th Avenue S.W. will stay open for pedestrians and there will be a temporary path on the south side of the avenue.

Water and sanitary services will not be affected.

Traffic will be detoured and there will be no parking allowed on the north side of both 15th Avenue and 18th Avenue S.W.

The work is part of the city's ongoing plan to upgrade utilities, rebuild the roadway and renew the sidewalks and streetscape on 17th Avenue, from Macleod Trail to 14th Street S.W.

Major road and utility reconstruction was completed in 2019, and most sections of paving were completed in 2021 and 2022.

Sidewalk repairs and streetscape work will be done in sections along the south side of the avenue this year, then moving to the north side in 2024.

Sidewalk repairs and streetscape improvements are now complete from Second to Fourth streets.

Work will continue from Fifth Street to Eighth Street S.W. until the end of June.
