City councillor Andre Chabot says he wants to be Calgary's mayor.

Chabot, who has represented Ward 10 since 2005,  won't say whether he'll seek the city's top seat in the 2017 or 2021 municipal elections.

"At this point I'm not prepared to go out to the public to make a formal announcement," said Chabot, "it's definitely a goal of mine."

Chabot says he'll look into his fundraising capabilities and public opinion before formalizing a plan.

"I don't think there's any surprise that my ambitions have been to run for mayor for a number of years," said Chabot.

The next municipal election is in October 2017.

Chabot says he would not be deterred from running against Mayor Naheed Nenshi if he chooses to run for the top job in future votes.
