RCMP say Edmonton major crimes, not ASIRT, investigating death of man in RCMP custody
The man died of undetermined causes, RCMP said
RCMP now say the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is not investigating after a man died in the custody of Airdrie RCMP.
Police initially said Saturday that ASIRT, the civilian oversight agency which investigates incidents involving police in Alberta, and RCMP Edmonton's major crimes unit are investigating.
But on Sunday, RCMP said that was an error and that only Edmonton's major crimes unit is investigating the death.
At 8 p.m. Friday, a 50-year-old man was arrested at CrossIron Mills mall.
The man died of undetermined causes while he was in police custody, RCMP said.
The man's family has been notified.
RCMP would only say that ASIRT does not investigate every death in police custody, and that more information would be provided on Monday.
CBC News has reached out to ASIRT for comment.
CrossIron Mills is a mall located just outside Calgary's northern city limits in Rocky View County.
