Calgary police Sgt. Katrina O'Reilly's tips to prevent bike theft.

As the temperature rises, so does the number of stolen bikes. This year there's been a 60 per cent increase in reported thefts, say Calgary police.

That translates into 730 bikes swiped since the beginning of 2015, said Sgt. Katrina O'Reilly. She calls it a steadily rising problem in Calgary.

Last summer eight bikes were stolen every day on average — a majority of them from garages and back yards.

It's the kind of downside that comes with more cyclists on the street, she said. O'Reilly also said some of the thefts could be the work of organized rings.

If you don't want to be the victim of bike theft, O'Reilly suggests taking some precautions. Hear her suggestions in the video above.
