Two new trustees were elected to fill vacancies on the Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD) Board of Trustees, according to unofficial results from Elections Calgary.

The CCSD held a byelection for wards 4, 7, 11 and 12 on Friday. Maria-Teresa Vecchio-Romano was elected to represent wards 4 and 7, while Chantelle Dur claimed victory in wards 11 and 12.

Vecchio-Romano and Dur will serve the remainder of the trustees' current term, which ends this year.

A total of 1,469 residents voted in the byelection across all four wards — 382 in wards 4 and 7, and 1,087 in wards 11 and 12.

Vecchio-Romano earned 244 votes in wards 4 and 7, beating out Dan Penna's 88 and Joe DeGagne's 50. Dur claimed 338 votes to win a much tighter race in wards 11 and 12, beating Kimberly Cichon who earned 306, Laura Dennison who had 276 and Steve Chapman with 167.

Elections Calgary says there is no established list of eligible separate school electors for the CCSD byelection, therefore there is not enough data to calculate voter turnout as a percentage.

Voting opportunities were provided in care facilities and shelters, in addition to advance voting and standard voting locations.

"I would like to thank the election workers who welcomed voters to the voting stations and the voters who participated in the CCSD byelection," Kate Martin, returning officer with Elections Calgary, said. "Together, you have shown a commitment to local democracy."
