City hall plans to launch a community consultation before considering final approval

Calgary city council has given first reading to a bylaw to ban shark fins in the city.

But two aldermen, John Mar and Brian Pincott, will do a community consultation on the proposed bylaw and report back to city council in January for final approval.

The bylaw won't go ahead right away since some aldermen want more consultation from the community.

The proposed bylaw calls for a ban on the possession, sale, consumption and advertisement of shark fins starting next July.

It also calls for fines of between $300 and $1,000.
