Calgary dog groomer charged with animal cruelty
Mariko Dormer facing charges under the Animal Protection Act and Criminal Code
The Calgary Humane Society, along with Calgary police, charged a woman in connection with an alleged animal abuse incident that was caught on video in June.
Mariko Dormer faces five counts of causing an animal to be in distress under the Animal Protection Act and three counts of causing unnecessary pain, suffering or injury to an animal under the Criminal Code.
Brad Nichols, the Humane Society's manager for animal cruelty investigations, says it's rare for someone to be charged under the Criminal Code.
"We investigate a lot of abuse concerns, or allegations at least," he said. "It's fairly unique that you have such compelling video evidence along with all of the other witness statements."
Dormer is expected to appear in court Oct. 8.
Fur Kids Daycare, the grooming company that Dormer worked for, has since shut down.
