Voters in the Calgary-Foothills riding will go to the polls on Sept. 3 to elect a member of the Alberta legislature.

Voters in the Calgary-Foothills riding will go to the polls on Sept. 3 to elect a member of the Alberta legislature.

Premier Rachel Notley announced the byelection date, which falls more than a month before the Oct. 19 federal vote.

Calgary-Foothills has been a longtime stronghold for the Progressive Conservatives, but has been without representation since the May 5 provincial election.

Former PC premier Jim Prentice handily won the riding but quickly resigned as the Tories were swept from power by the NDP.

The NDP and Liberals have already chosen candidates for the byelection and the Wildrose is to hold its nomination meeting Aug. 15.

The Progressive Conservatives and the other parties are expected to choose candidates in the coming weeks.
