A man in his 70s was crossing Memorial Drive in a marked crosswalk at 47th Street S.E. at around 12:20 a.m. on May 18, 2024, when he was struck by the driver of an eastbound BMW X5.

Police say the driver fled, continuing eastbound, and abandoned the vehicle, which investigators located a short while later.

The victim died at the scene.

After a "lengthy investigation," police said Thursday they have identified the driver of the BMW and he was arrested on Tuesday.

Muhammad Rayyan Arshad, a 24-year-old Calgary resident, has been charged with one count each of hit-and-run and hit-and-run causing death.

He was scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.

Police are still looking to identify the driver of a white sedan they say was travelling beside the BMW at the time of the collision, because they believe that driver may have "important information relating to the investigation."
