Calgary mom tells police about putting baby in dumpster
Shocking details from Meredith Borowiec's interview with Calgary police heard in double murder trial
A mother's tearful interview with police from a hospital bed just hours after her newborn was found by the father in northwest dumpster was played in a Calgary courtroom today.
Meredith Katharine Borowiec faces an attempted murder charge for the 2010 incident, which goes to trial later this year.
She is currently on trial for second-degree murder charges in the death of two babies that prosecutors say were born to her in 2008 and 2009.
It is alleged both babies died shortly after they were born and their bodies were never recovered.
Prosecutors are trying to link the 2010 incident to Borowiec's current double murder trial as "similar fact evidence," which means giving the facts of prior actions of the accused for the purpose of proving the misconduct at issue.
Police interview describes graphic details
Borowiec said in the police interview played in court that she didn't know she was pregnant.
She said she gave birth in bathroom and the baby ended up in the toilet.
Borowiec told police she cut the umbilical cord, wrapped the baby in a towel and two separate bags and then tossed it into a dumpster outside her house.
She said she was scared of facing "the reality of the situation" after giving birth in the bathroom.
Borowiec says she thought the baby was dead when she tossed it into the garbage bin, and says she would have done things differently.
But while she said she didn't think the baby was alive, she also told police she wasn't surprised it survived after it was rescued.
CBC News has learned she gave birth again in July while she was in custody at the Southern Alberta Forensic Psychiatric Centre. The baby boy was given up for adoption.
