Calgary fire crews responded to a large structure fire in northwest Calgary Tuesday afternoon.

Multiple 911 calls at 2:15 p.m. alerted the Calgary Fire Department to the fire at Short Road N.W. off Bowdale Crescent, said spokesperson Carol Henke.

As of approximately 5 p.m., the fire was declared to be under control. Crews remained at the scene into the evening to put out hotspots and watch for flare-ups.

She said the structure is believed to have been a vacant boarded-up home.

According to Henke, nobody is believed to have been inside the building, and no injuries were reported.

As the structure is located in a forested area, firefighters focused on both extinguishing the fire and preventing its spread to other structures, Henke said.

With no hydrants in the immediate area of the fire, crews from the Calgary Fire Department and neighbouring Springbank Fire Station were used to supply water.

"We're very grateful for people who have called 911 right away. Every second makes a difference," said Henke.
