Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra performs tribute to the Flames
Encore performance tips hat to winning team to the tune of 'O Fortuna'
As Flames forwards Jiri Hudler and Michael Ferland scored the final goals Saturday night at the Saddledome, a few blocks away, couple thousand people were taking in a performance by the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra.
At the end of the concert, resident conductor Adam Johnson returned to the stage of the Jack Singer Concert Hall and announced that Calgary was on its way to round two of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Cheers and chants filled the auditorium, but before the crowd really got going, the CPO orchestra chorus stepped on stage.
"What was special about this encore is that the content of it was dependent on the outcome of the Calgary Flames game that was going to take place that night," said CPO assistant principal bassoonist Michael Hope.
Choir director Timothy Shantz and his wife tweaked the lyrics to Carl Off's "O Fortuna", allowing CPO singers and musicians to deliver their own special tribute to the Calgary Flames.
Here are the lyrics:
O it's playoffs. Here in Calg'ry. Let's bring home. The Stanley Cup!
Jiri Hudler, Johnny Gaudreau, Sean Monahan take control.
Mikael Backlund, Sam Bennett and Joe Colborne are on a roll.
Dennis Wideman, Kris Russell and Jonas Hiller in the goal.
Mason Raymond, Brandon Bollig, Josh Jooris fight for the puck.
Michael Ferland, Matt Stajan and David Jones finish their checks.
Derek Engellend ,T.J. Brodie Schlemko, Tyler Wotherspoon.
