Calgary Police have confirmed that a man was shot during the resolution of an incident at the Sirocco CTrain station Wednesday afternoon, saying he was taken to hospital in serious condition.

The incident started around 1:40 p.m., when a transit employee called police to say a passenger appeared to be holding a gun on his lap, police said in a release.

The tactical unit was called in and proceeded to evacuate the train, which was held for several hours at the Sirocco LRT station on 17th Avenue, west of Sarcee Trail S.W.

A man matching the description given to police by the transit worker was contained as the sole occupant after the other passengers had been removed.

Police say the tactical unit officers tried for hours to safely resolve the incident.

However, the situation escalated at around 4:30 p.m., and the man was shot by a member of the tactical unit, police said.

He was treated on site by a member of the tactical emergency medical services before being taken to hospital.

The West LRT line was stopped all afternoon. Police said the station would remain closed during the investigation, urging passengers to find alternative routes.

Alberta's Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) will investigate the officer-involved shooting. ASIRT investigates serious or sensitive allegations of police misconduct, as well as incidents that result in serious injury or death.
