RCMP have charged a Calgary police officer with assault and mischief to property after a domestic incident.

The incident occurred on Oct. 8 while the officer was off duty in a neighbouring municipality.

The male officer, who has been with the Calgary Police Service for 13 years, will not be named.

"As is often the case in domestic incidents, his name is not being released to protect the identity and privacy of the victim," CPS said in a release.

The officer is now on administrative leave with pay.

"Domestic violence is a serious issue and we offer many supports to our members to try to prevent it," the release said. "Our psychological services section has licensed therapists available to members and their families, as well as outside professional help if specialized marriage or relationship counselling is required."

The case will be investigated by CPS's domestic conflict unit.
