Calgary police identify victim and lay charges in Radisson Heights homicide

Charges have been laid in the shooting death of a 39-year-old man Friday in the Calgary community of Radisson Heights, police say. 

In a statement on Monday, police said the victim has been identified as Jamie O'Leary, confirmed after an autopsy conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Tarek Che Sharples, 39, has been charged with second-degree murder.

Police believe the two men knew each other and that O'Leary's death was the result of an ongoing dispute. 

Sharples appeared in court on Monday morning. 

"This has been an incredibly busy time for our investigators who have dealt with six homicides over a two-week period," said Staff Sgt. Sean Gregson of the Calgary Police Service's homicide unit. 

Police were called to the 100 block of Radcliffe Close S.E. around 1:30 p.m. on Friday after reports of gunshots. 

Emergency responders found O'Leary in life-threatening condition. He died shortly afterward. 

After the incident, security camera images of a beige or grey Chevrolet Venture minivan believed to be connected to the shooting were released by investigators. 

On Sunday, police said the vehicle had been located and that an arrest had been made. 

Officers are investigating two other recent shooting deaths in the city — a man in his 20s who died after being shot in Crescent Heights on Friday, and the homicide of 16-year-old Jal Acor Jal. 

Police do not believe that the three deaths are connected.
