10 Calgary police shootings and 5 deaths this year

A machete attack, failed traffic stops, and an antique replica handgun have caused Calgary police officers to shoot at suspects in nine different incidents this year, killing four people. 

All cases led to an investigation by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT).

Here are the details of the officer-involved shootings in Calgary so far in 2016.

Jan. 24: Man in wheelchair killed in Huntington Hills

Dave McQueen, 53, was killed by police after he began shooting into his community of Huntington Hills from his living room. 

McQueen shot into the street, hitting several nearby homes and a city bus. During the armed standoff, police told neighbours to take cover in their basements.

According to his caregiver, and many posts to social media, McQueen was frustrated with the health-care system and the government, and was stuck in a broken wheelchair with no proper home care.

One of the officers who shot at McQueen was the same officer who shot and killed Anthony Heffernan just months before.

ASIRT has not yet released its findings in the McQueen investigation.

March 20: Replica antique handgun in Stanley Park

Police were called to Stanley Park on March 20 after receiving reports of a man walking around with a gun near an area where children were playing.

After he brandished what turned out to be a replica antique handgun, police shot at the man but he fled into the park. Confronted a second time, the suspect put the gun on the ground and surrendered.

Police charged the 23-year-old with assault with a weapon, assaulting a peace officer, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and obstruction.

ASIRT has yet to release a report.

July 15: Fatal shooting in Inglewood parkade 

Sanjai Prasad, 41, was shot and killed by Calgary police in a parkade in Inglewood on July 15 after officers were called in response to complaints of "unknown persons entering the parkade in a vehicle."

Police blocked exits and responding officers noticed an SUV — later determined to be stolen — circling the parkade. 

Police tried to stop the SUV, but the driver evaded them and struck a parked vehicle, according to ASIRT. The front passenger got out of the car and fled.

A confrontation between another set of officers and the remaining occupants of the vehicle ended with Prasad being shot and killed by police.

The other two passengers, a 24-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman, were arrested unharmed.

ASIRT has not yet released its report.

Sept. 17: Marlborough Mall machete attack

A Calgary police officer is still off-duty, recovering from his injuries, after being attacked with a machete in Marlborough Mall on Sept. 17.

Police were called to the mall for reports of a man fighting people and swinging a machete. When police arrived, the suspect fled into a nearby Sears store. As the officer drew his gun, the man slashed him with a 48-centimetre machete.

The man accused in the attack, 24-year-old Antonio Bautista, survived being shot by the officer and now faces charges of aggravated assault, assault of a peace officer, and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public.

Bautista was convicted last year of assaulting a police officer. He was taken into custody over mental health concerns a week before the attack at the mall, but released, according to CBC sources.

ASIRT's investigation continues.

Sept. 17: Blackfoot truck stop 

On the same day as the Marlborough Mall machete attack, police shot at the driver of a pickup truck near the Blackfoot truck stop.

The driver fled from police after an officer conducting a traffic stop spotted a rifle on the passenger seat. The driver backed into a minivan and then crashed into and ruptured a natural gas line.

One of the officers shot at the driver, who was hit with broken glass, but was otherwise uninjured.

A 23-year-old man faces seven charges, including assaulting a peace officer, assault with a weapon, and hit and run.

ASIRT is investigating.

Oct. 4: 12 Mile Coulee Road traffic stop

Police pulled over a stolen truck on Oct. 4 near the intersection of 12 Mile Coulee Road and Blueridge Rise N.W. in the early morning hours.

The driver surrendered to police while the passenger got behind the wheel and took off. One officer felt threatened when the truck got near and fired his gun, striking the truck, according to police.

The man who fled the scene was later located in Cochrane and arrested. Nobody was injured.

ASIRT has not released its findings.

Oct. 11: Fatal shooting in Sundance

A man died after a police shooting in Calgary's southeast on Oct. 11.

Screaming could be heard when police received a call from a home in the 100 block of Sunmount Crescent S.E. around 11 a.m.

Officers arrived to find one man injured outside the home and were confronted by a second man with a weapon in a garage.

ASIRT has been called in to investigate.

Nov. 2: Officer dragged by stolen car in Dover

A Calgary police officer shot the driver of a stolen car, after a second officer was dragged through an alley, police said the night of the non-fatal shooting.

Two officers in a marked police car approached a stolen Honda Civic in an alley in the 3800 block of 30th Avenue S.E. in Dover. One of the officers ended up being dragged by the vehicle and the other officer fired his gun at the driver.

The 20-year-old driver was taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. The officer who was dragged had minor injuries. 

A few days later, ASIRT announced it had launched a second investigation into the case, focused on two additional members of the force. 

Nov. 22: Man on bail killed by police

Terrence Weinmeyer, 49, was killed by police in a Montgomery strip-mall parking lot in what is suspected to be a drug-related truck theft.

Weinmeyer has a lengthy criminal record and was out on bail at the time of his death.

Two weeks earlier, Weinmeyer was released from custody after being charged with two counts of possession of stolen property over $5,000 for allegedly stealing vehicles.

It's alleged that officers with the break-and-enter unit were moving in on a vehicle to make an arrest when the driver put it in reverse and police opened fire.

ASIRT has asked Calgary police not to release any details of the incident until investigators are able to talk to witnesses.

Nov. 29: Woman in Sunalta

Exactly a week after Weinmeyer's fatal shooting, Calgary police again opened fire, killing a woman in the southwest community of Sunalta.

Police said the 27-year-old was armed with two knives and acting erratically. She was known to police, officials said.

An officer who has been with the force for one year fired her gun at the woman who was pronounced dead in hospital, police said.
