Led by instructors Tina Fedun and Nina Rojkovskaia from SambaSoul YYC, attendees explored the significance of Samba, particularly during Carnival celebrations, while learning two distinct styles: samba no pé and samba de roda in the fourth installment of CBC Calgary and Calgary Public Library's Stories in Motion.

In a whirlwind of rhythm and movement, participants at first of the March Stories in Motion sessions were transported straight to the heart of Brazil's vibrant Samba culture. In honour of a dance form which is now regarded as a national treasure in Brazil, the session was a lively homage to the vibrancy, energy and rich history of this iconic dance form.

With the pulsating beats of Capoeira Brasil Calgary's live percussion driving the tempo, participants eagerly formed circles, ready to unleash their inner Samba stars.

Led by instructors Tina Fedun and Nina Rojkovskaia from SambaSoul YYC, the atmosphere was electric as they guided everyone through lively across-the-floor exercises with their enthusiasm, smiles and laughter all around.

As hips swayed and feet tapped to the rhythm, Tina delved into the significance of Carnival, offering fascinating insights into the colourful traditions that make Samba an integral part of Brazilian culture.

Carnival, the grandest celebration in Brazil, is a time of exuberance and revelry, where the streets come alive with music, dance, and elaborate costumes. Samba serves as the heartbeat of Carnival, with its infectious rhythms and spirited movements captivating participants and spectators alike.

Within the world of Samba, Fedun introduced participants to two distinct styles: Samba no pé and Samba de roda. Samba no pé, often referred to as "Samba on the foot," is characterized by its smooth, flowing movements, where dancers showcase their individual flair while maintaining a steady rhythm with their feet.

It's a dance of personal expression, where every step tells a story and every movement radiates joy.

On the other hand, Samba de roda, or "Samba in a circle," is a communal dance performed in a circular formation. Rooted in Afro-Brazilian traditions, this style emphasizes interaction and connection among participants, as they move in unison to the driving beat of the music.

It's a celebration of community and solidarity, where dancers come together to share in the collective joy of Samba.

As the workshop wrapped up, participants departed with newfound dance moves and a deeper appreciation for the vibrant world of Samba.

It was more than just a dance class—it was an exhilarating journey through Brazil's cultural landscape, where joy knows no bounds and the rhythm of life beats strong.

With Samba in their hearts and smiles on their faces, dancers left ready to spread the spirit of Samba wherever they go, embodying the essence of Brazil's colourful and dynamic culture.
