Crown seeks electronic monitoring for man who kidnapped, raped teen as prison term ends
12-year sentence for Corey Manyshots expired Friday

One of two Calgary brothers who kidnapped a teenager from a bus stop and raped her repeatedly more than a decade ago made a court appearance Monday. Police and prosecutors are attempting to manage his risk in the community after his prison sentence ended three days ago.
In 2018, Corey Manyshots was handed a 12-year sentence. With credit for the time he'd already spent behind bars, Manyshots had just over seven years left to serve.
His sentence expired on Friday, meaning he was no longer under any parole board or court-imposed conditions.
Calgary's high-risk offender police and prosecution units issued a peace bond and took Manyshots into custody last Thursday.
Manyshots, 36, appeared briefly in court Monday. He was represented by duty counsel lawyer Bob Haslam, who put the case over to May 1 so the Crown can hammer out the peace bond conditions.
Janice Walsh, head of the prosecution's high-risk offender unit, confirmed that the Crown has consent from the attorney general to seek a condition that would require Manyshots be electronically monitored.
Walsh said peace bonds are common in cases where there is a "very high-risk offender" who reaches warrant expiry (the end of a federal prison sentence).
It is expected the peace bond conditions will be imposed for a two-year period.
Peace bond also likely for brother
Haslam confirmed he is helping Manyshots line up a lawyer for Thursday's hearing.
Peace bonds are imposed when a judge is satisfied there are reasonable grounds to fear an offence will be committed. In this case, the peace bond will be designed so the authorities can monitor Manyshots when he is released back into the community.
Corey's younger brother Cody Manyshots still has several months left on his sentence but it is expected the Crown will apply for peace bond in his case as well.
Teen escaped after 8 hours
In 2014, Corey and Cody — who were 25 and 21 years old, respectively — kidnapped a teen from a bus stop in the northeast community of Taradale.
The brothers dragged the 17-year-old into an alley where they physically and sexually assaulted her. She was then forced to walk to their home in Martindale.
Both brothers continued to rape the teen throughout the night.
When they finally fell asleep, the girl escaped the home.
During their sentencing hearing, court heard that both brothers have severe FASD (fetal alcohol spectrum disorder). The prosecutor at the time told the judge that both brothers were a high risk to commit violent, sexual crimes once released.
Corey's lawyer at the time told the judge his client has an IQ of 45 and can barely read or write.
