Council takes step towards disclosing top city salaries

Calgary councillors have voted to take a closer look at creating a "sunshine" list that would reveal the salaries of the highest-paid city employees.

'Sunshine' list could reveal pay of roughly 3,000 City of Calgary workers

Calgary councillors have voted to take a closer look at creating a "sunshine" list that would reveal the salaries of the highest-paid city employees.

The annual list, available to the public, would include those who make more than $100,000 a year.

Many cities and provinces already maintain such lists, arguing they provide greater transparency on how public money is spent.

The motion approved Monday by Calgary councillors calls for a report to come back to city council by September on how such a salary disclosure list would work.

Council heard during the debate that about 20 per cent of the city's workforce — or about 3,000 city employees — currently make more than $100,000 each year.
