Police have issued a warrant for second-degree murder
Update May 17, 2020: Police say Shay Vincent Saddleback, who was wanted on a Canada-wide second-degree murder warrant, was located in Edmonton. The original story appears below.
Police have identified the victim of a fatal assault near a convenience story in southeast Calgary on Sunday.
Justin Applegarth, 27, was found around 10 p.m. in the 200 block of 52nd Street southeast in Penbrooke Meadows. He died at the scene.
After speaking with witnesses, investigators believe the assault took place nearby in a parking lot outside the 7-Eleven in the 5300 block of Eighth Avenue S.E.
Calgary police reviewed CCTV footage and have issued a second-degree, Canada-wide murder warrant on Monday for 25-year-old Shay Vincent Saddleback.
Police say they are still working to determine a motive for the attack, but say it's not believed to be random and the victim and Saddleback may be known to each other.
Police said Saddleback has a medium build, standing at about five-foot-nine-inches tall and weighing about 160 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. He has tattoos on both his forearms.
Police are also releasing photos of a man who they say may have information about the fatal assault.
He is described as Indigenous, between six-feet and six-feet-three-inches tall, in his mid 20s, with a tattoo on the left side of his face. He was driving a red car.
"We are asking members of our community who have information about this incident to come forward," Staff Sgt. Martin Schiavetta said in an emailed release. "It is likely that someone knows where the accused is and we need their help to bring closure to the victim's family."
Anyone with information is asked to call the homicide unit tip line at 403-428-8877 or contact Crime Stoppers.
