Driver died after trying to pass semi at 'excessive speed' and slamming into other vehicles, police say
Woman in her 20s seriously injured after speeding driver spins out of control, hits oncoming Jeep
A driver in his thirties died after spinning out and slamming into two other vehicles while trying to pass a semi-trailer at "excessive speed" on Peigan Trail in southeast Calgary Wednesday, police say.
The fatal head-on collision happened around 4:15 p.m. Wednesday around the 4700 block of Peigan Trail S.E., closing a stretch of the road for a few hours.
A car driven by a man in his thirties was travelling westbound when it passed the semi at "a high rate of speed," the Calgary Police Service said in an release issued Thursday.
The driver braked "aggressively" before striking a Honda CR-V driven by a man in his fifties, police said.
The car began to spin, crossing a gravel-covered centre median onto the eastbound travel lane.
It was struck by an eastbound Jeep SUV driven by a woman in her early twenties.
The car and Jeep came to rest on the shoulder of the roadway, while the CR-V driver was able to make a controlled stop.

The collision killed the man driving the car and seriously injured the woman driving the Jeep.
The CR-V driver escaped uninjured.
Police said neither alcohol nor drugs were considered factors in the collision but said speeding contributed.
Police continue to investigate.
