First try at penguin breeding fails, says zoo

Calgary Zoo officials say their first attempt at breeding penguins hasn't worked.

In September, one of the penguins laid an egg. A few days ago, keepers saw that penguin moving around. The egg fell off her feet, cracked and was knocked into a pool.

When zoo keepers retrieved it they discovered the egg had never been viable, but officials say this is a positive first step towards successful breeding behaviour.

The zoo's Penguin Plunge opened in February. It features 46 of the flightless birds in a $24.5-million complex located just inside the main entrance of the zoo.
