Hawk the police lab meets student who wrote award-winning speech
'He's very chilled-out,' says 10-year-old about Hawk
A 10-year-old girl who wrote an award-winning speech about dogs with jobs met one of Alberta's most well-known professional pooches today.
Grade 5 student, Sierra LaValley won best 4-H club speech after delivering it at her school.
Today, she and her family travelled from Grand Prairie, Alta. to meet meet Hawk, the Calgary Police Service's comfort dog.
Hawk is used to ease the anxieties of child victims and witnesses at court. He also comforts victims of violent crimes.
After meeting the four-year-old black lab, Lavalley described him as "chilled out."
"He'll just sit there and I understand how the kids feel comforted by him," she said.
LaValley chose the topic because she says she wanted people to know what dogs are capable of.
"Everyone just thinks they're for companionship and they're not really used for much but Hawk, he's used for a lot, like the kids in the courtroom that are scared and he helps them."
