Calgary Remand Centre correctional officer charged with assaulting inmates
Charges come after year-long probe by Calgary police
A correctional officer at the Calgary Remand Centre has been charged with assaulting four inmates during two incidents on the same day early last year.
Following the alleged incidents on Feb. 21, 2019, the Crown Prosecutor's Office asked the Calgary Police Service to look into allegations that the peace officer had used excessive force.
After a year-long investigation, Heera Singh Chahal, 29, has been charged with one count of assault with a weapon and four counts of assault causing bodily harm.
During the first incident, Chahal allegedly hit an inmate after responding to a disturbance.
Later the same day, it's alleged Chahal — while responding to a fight between inmates outside in the yard — assaulted the inmates even though they had stopped fighting and complied with his commands.
It's also alleged that he used pepper spray on one inmate.
Chahal's next court appearance is set for April 15.
