A motorcyclist was thrown about 18 metres when he was struck by a car on Saturday night in northeast Calgary.

The collision happened at about 8:20 p.m. MT at McKnight Boulevard and 68th Street N.E. as the southbound vehicle turning left crossed the path of the northbound motorcyclist.

"He was transported to hospital in serious but stable condition with significant life-altering injuries," police said in a release.

An off-duty paramedic was the first person on the scene and provided care until EMS arrived.

The rider, a man in his late 20s, suffered multiple traumatic injuries including spinal damage, said EMS spokesman Stuart Brideaux.

The driver of the car was not injured.

It's not believed alcohol was involved but speed is being investigated as a contributing factor, police say.
