A development plan for Paskapoo Slopes is set to proceed after a majority of council voted in favour of a rezoning application for the site on Monday.

Calgary city council passed second and third reading by 12 to three votes, with Mayor Naheed Nenshi, Coun. Druh Farrell and Coun. Brian Pincott opposed to the plan for the grassland land east of Canada Olympic Park (COP) and south of the Trans-Canada Highway between Sarcee Trail and Bowfort Road.

The plan put forth by Trinity Hills calls for a mixed used development that includes retail, offices and condos, along with a road connecting Bowfort Road with Sarcee Trail.

The developer is planning to build on approximately 40 hectares of the lower slopes and donate the remainder, about 65 hectares, to the city for use as a park.

About 10,000 people had signed a petition against the project asking the city to preserve the entire area as urban wilderness and grassland.
