Police are investigating a fatal shooting in the southeast Calgary community of Penbrooke Meadows.

EMS spokesperson Stuart Brideaux said police and EMS jointly responded to a home in the 500 block of Penworth Way S.E. at 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

The shooting left a man in critical, life-threatening condition, police said. The victim died shortly after.

One man was taken into custody at the scene, police said.

The shooting was not random and the people involved are known to each other, police said.

Neighbour Vince Lalonde said earlier in the day, he drove to the store and passed a man sitting in an SUV in front of the home.

"I looked at him and he looked at me when I drove by. When I came back, police were all over the place," he said.

When he returned, the same SUV was parked on the lawn of the home — still running — and a man was being handcuffed, while another police officer entered the home while holding a firearm.

Brideaux said no people were transported to hospital, and EMS was expected to clear the scene shortly.

The street was shut down to allow officers to investigate.

Anyone with information about the incident is being asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
