Calgary Folk Fest set to debut designated pot consumption area this weekend
Festival executive director says it's a pilot project, may not be permanent fixture
If you're planning to partake in a toke or two while enjoying the tunes at Calgary's Folk Fest this weekend, you've got the green light.
The music festival is doing a pilot project to test how a designated cannabis consumption area will jibe with the rest of the festivities.
"We're offering people that want to experience the festival that way a place where they can consume their legal cannabis if they're 18 years of age or older," said the event's executive director, Sara Leishman.
"At the same time, for those who don't want to be around it, they can avoid that area entirely and still experience their festival in the way that they want to."
Leishman said this is an effort to be proactive on something they know will be a reality at the festival now that cannabis has been legalized.
"We are a family-friendly festival first and foremost. Thus far, there hasn't been any pushback from the public because they realize that we're really trying to be proactive here and offer an opportunity for everybody to experience the festival as they would like to."
The designated consumption site will be at the east end of Prince's Island, near Stage 6, and will be accessible only to event ticket holders.
The Calgary Folk Music Festival runs from July 25 to 28.
