Scam targets prospective renters, Calgary police warn

At least 13 people who were simply looking for a place to live in Calgary were taken in by a rental scam this week, police say.

At least 13 people who were looking for a place to live in Calgary were taken in by a rental scam this week, police say.

The victims responded to an internet banner ad placed on various websites that listed apartment units for rent in a building in the Killarney-Glengarry area, police said in a release.

A man and a woman showed the potential tenants the suites, gave them their keys and collected rent, police said. Victims were then told their suite was being renovated and they were given a move-in date.

When the new tenants returned to the building, they discovered their keys did not work and realized they had been victims of a fraud, police said.

The building is on the 2000 block of 34 Street in the city's southwest.

Police are looking for the two people who showed the apartment.
