About 160 kids are back in school in Siksika today after a lengthy break.

The boiler at Crowfoot Elementary School broke down at the end of November, leaving the building without heat.

Students continued to go to school — wearing winter coats, boots and mittens — and the school used space heaters in class.

The pipes burst in mid-December and the school flooded, The flood damage left only a portion of the facility usable because of mould.

Officials promised repairs would be completed during Christmas break but students and parents were still waiting at home a month later.

Hector Winnipeg, Siksika band council member and school board chairman, says they are keeping an eye on the school to make sure problems are properly resolved. Air-quality testing was done before students were allowed to return to the school, and everything appears to be fine.

Siksika Nation is about an hour’s drive east of Calgary.
