Snow expected in areas surrounding Banff National Park this weekend has some people celebrating as they get ready to head out to local ski hills.

Drivers are being cautioned to take their time when heading west.

Snowfall warnings ended for many areas near the mountains west of Calgary on Friday afternoon, but flurries are in the forecast over the weekend.

"Rain showers changing to snow this evening and ending before morning, then mainly cloudy," said Environment Canada on its website.

There is also a chance of flurries on Saturday afternoon and a 40 per cent chance of snowfall on Sunday.

Calgary's forecast says there is chance of rain periodically through the weekend, but those showers could turn to snow on Saturday night.

But many ski resorts in the area are welcoming the weather.

Norquay, Nakiska and Lake Louise are already open, and Sunshine Village will be opening with four lifts on Saturday.

Castle Mountain in southwest Alberta plans to open in early December.

A large dump of snow also hit many resorts just over the border in B.C.
