16-year-old driver killed in one of 2 fatal weekend Stoney Trail collisions

A collision on Friday left a 16-year-old driver dead, and a Sunday crash killed a 25-year-old driver and seriously injured another driver. Both incidents happened on Stoney Trail S.W. and excessive speed is believed by police to have been a factor.

Calgary police say excessive speed was believed to be a factor in two fatal collisions on Stoney Trail over the weekend.

A 16-year-old driver was killed on Friday at around 9:55 p.m. when he was travelling westbound on Stoney Trail S.W., police said.

His vehicle caught on fire after leaving the roadway and crashing into a support post for an overhead sign. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 16-year-old was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

2nd fatal crash

On Sunday, another collision on Stoney Trail S.W. killed a 25-year-old male driver and seriously injured a 25-year-old woman at 6:17 p.m., police said.

The man is believed to have been travelling south when his vehicle left the roadway, entered the northbound lanes of Stoney Trail and rolled before being struck by another vehicle.

The male driver was killed after being ejected from the vehicle and striking a large overhead sign, police said.

The other vehicle's driver, a 25-year-old woman, was taken to hospital with serious life-threatening injuries. The vehicle's passenger, a 22-year-old man, went to hospital with minor injuries.

Police said drugs and alcohol are not believed to have been factors in either collision, but that they are investigating excessive speed as a factor.
