Man charged with murder and attempted murder after 2 shootings in city's northeast
Calgary police say suspect and man who died were known to each other
Calgary police have charged a man in connection to two shootings, one of them fatal, that happened in the city's northeast over the long weekend.
Taylor Roan, 25, was taken into custody Sunday and has since been charged with second-degree murder after a shooting Saturday in the community of Castleridge.
He has also been charged with attempted murder and robbery with a firearm in relation to an incident Friday in the community of Falconridge.
Police identified the dead victim as 41-year-old Nathan Ward. Investigators said he was known to Roan, and officers continue to investigate the motive behind this incident as well as the relationship between the two.
They said the motive behind the shooting on Friday was robbery. The victim was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition.
He and the Roan were not known to each other, police said.
"Early in our investigation, we noted similarities between these two cases. Due to the violent nature and proximity in time, public safety became a priority for us," said Staff-Sgt. Sean Gregson.
"Our teams worked around the clock, and we employed numerous investigative resources from across the service to find the suspect involved in these shootings. With this arrest, we have removed that threat from the community, ensuring the safety of the public."
The death was Calgary's 24th homicide of the year.
