It's been a rough few years for the central Alberta town of Sylvan Lake, but things could be looking up.

Roughly two months after the community's old arena collapsed, Sylvan Lake's Medican Multiplex is guaranteed $50,000 for upgrades after the town made the top four in Kraft's Hockeyville contest.

Voters must now choose two finalists from the four remaining communities — Sylvan Lake; Salmon Arm, B.C.; Kingston, N.S.; or Bedeque, P.E.I.

The last two communities standing will get $100,000 while the final winner will also get a visit from CBC and will host a preseason NHL game.

In January, the roof of Sylvan Lake's arena caved in.

An engineering assessment later said the arena would have had several years left of useful life, but only if there was no more than 12 inches of snow on the roof.

Like much of central Alberta, the town had received far more snow than usual this winter.
