Calgary entertainment: 5 things to do this weekend
Get into the holiday spirit — or not — with offbeat Christmas shows or a weirdly fun cult movie
People's social calendars are likely full of obligations — holiday parties, shopping and baking to name just a few.

Naughty But Nice
In what has become a local holiday tradition, Naughty But Nice combines holiday-themed songs and sketches. Composed by Calgary's Joe Slabe, the show won the Calgary Critics' Award for Best Production of a Musical last year. If you've seen the production before, you'll be treated to a few returning favourites — including Elf on the Shelf and Brendan the Brown-Nosed Reindeer. But there will also be a few new sketches and songs. Naughty But Nice runs through Dec. 20 with 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. shows at Lunchbox Theatre.
Atlantis
In non-holiday themed entertainment, the Calgary Young People's Theatre is staging Atlantis. It's about a mysterious storm, and a beautiful and thriving utopia. Or is it? It's a kid-friendly show, but not suitable for children five and younger. Atlantis plays tonight and Saturday. Shows are at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the West Village Theatre at 2007 10th Ave. S.W. Enter through the alley entrance.
Heebee-jeebees
Choral music is popular this time of year and there are a couple of shows to choose from this weekend. Calgary's favourite a cappella quartet will sing its goofy, quasi-carols at River Park Church at 3818 14a St. S.W. The Heebee-Jeebees Christmas Show happens on Sunday and all proceeds go to the Food Bank. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are available at Ticketweb. Looking for more classical choral? The Calgary Women's Choir Savridi singers perform an interesting mix of 14th- and 16th-century Christmas carols, accompanied by a harp. They'll also mix it up with gospel and contemporary selections. The show happens at 7 p.m. at Scarboro United Church at 134 Scarboro Ave. S.W.
Don Verdean
For those who enjoy off-beat, stupid fun movies, Don Verdean is playing at the Globe Cinema downtown all weekend. Released last year to little fanfare, the movie has become a comedy cult classic, making the rounds at second-run cinemas. Don Verdean is about a self-proclaimed Biblical archeologist who is hired by an ambitious small-town pastor to find sacred relics in the Holy Land. The sacred relics turn out not to be authentic, and hilarity ensues. Flight of the Conchords' Jermaine Clement is likely the only recognizable name among the actors. Don Verdean plays at the Globe all weekend, with many showtimes to choose from. Check the Globe's website for details.
Steve Pineo Christmas Concert
Calgary bluesman Steve Pineo is giving a Christmas concert at the Ironwood Stage and Grill in Inglewood all weekend with shows Friday and Saturday at 9 p.m. The Sunday show is at 7 p.m. Get there early because tickets are only sold at the door.
